If it is Before the Cancellation Deadline:

You can cancel at anytime and receive your deposit as a credit to your tuition account within 7-14 business days as long as you cancel in accordance with the cancellation schedule below.

Self-cancellation is available for non-required students or during non-required (summer) semesters:

  • Summer I – March 15
  • Summer II – April 15
  • Fall – May 15
  • Spring – October 1

Until the cancellation deadlines students can cancel each application through the Application Editor for each individual semester on Housing Online. Any deposit on file will be transferred to tuition within 7-14 business days.

If we are on a waitlist and you decide later that you need university housing, you will be placed at the end of the waitlist.

If the Cancellation Deadline Has Passed:

You will lose your deposit and be assessed a charge based on the cancellation schedule. If your housing is cancelled prior to receiving an assignment, you will be assessed a cancellation fee according to the cancellation schedule at the rate of a standard apartment double. If the cancellation deadline has passed, but you can demonstrate a significant change in academic, co-op or financial circumstances, you may petition to remove this charge.

If you are on co-op further than 20 miles outside of the Boston area, studying abroad, taking a medical leave of absence or withdrawing from the University, you can cancel your housing, regardless of the cancellation schedule. To submit your request, email housing@northeastern.edu; please include your name, NUID number, the semester you are requesting to cancel, and a detailed reason for the request.  Documented verification from your co-op or academic adviser is required and should be forwarded via email. Once received, we can cancel your housing assignment without penalty if received prior to the start of the semester.

Please note: Your adviser (Financial Aid, Study Abroad, Academic, or Co-op) cannot cancel your housing contract. You must request the cancellation by e-mail to housing@northeastern.edu.
