University Housing in Boston
Northeastern University’s Housing & Residential Life system includes student housing that is either owned or leased by the University. All students must conduct themselves in a manner consistent with the University’s expectations, as stated in Guide to Residence Hall Living, the Student Handbook and the Residence Hall and Dining License Agreement and any and all other applicable University policies, procedures, supplemental agreements, rules and regulations.
- Each room comes with a bed frame, mattress (twin XL), desk, desk chair and dresser
- Since each room is unique, we are unable to provide square footage/measurements of individual rooms
- All Northeastern University housing is smoke-free
- The majority are double or triple occupancy rooms
- Dining halls are in Stetson East, Stetson West and International Village
- Common community spaces, in most halls, can be used for studying, group projects or student activities
- All first year students are required to have a meal plan
- Single rooms are available on a limited basis. If interested, please indicate your preference on the housing application, or if you have a medical or accessibility concern, please register with the Disability Resource Center or University Health and Counseling Services through the Housing Accommodation Process.
- All Gender housing options are available
The university reserves the right to alter these designations at any time. During certain terms, First Year students could be assigned to any university residence hall, even those without the First Year designation. Upon the return from their NUin semester, NUin Students are often placed in second year or upperclassmen accommodations based on availability for the Spring of their first year.

First Year Students
Undergraduates who enter as first-year students to Boston through fall admission and NUin will live in university housing during their first and second years, unless a global experience or co-op experience takes them outside of the city of Boston. The First Year Experience (FYE) program has been developed to help Northeastern University’s first year students transition into this new and exciting chapter of their lives – college life.
Residential Life is dedicated to working with Northeastern students to help them build strong community living environments that support personal development and academic success. These environments provide opportunities to learn outside of the classroom through the Living Learning Community program.
The foundation for the FYE program is held by four pillars: Personal Development, Academic Success, Experiential Learning and Community Development. These pillars are the guiding principles of the programs and resources specific to the needs of first year students. The goal is to help students navigate the University, familiarize them in their first year living away from home, and with life in a new environment.
Required Second Years
Undergraduates who enter as first-year students through fall admission and NUin will live in university housing during their first and second years, unless a global experience or co-op experience takes them outside of the city of Boston. Students joining campus from a second year specialized entry program, NU Immerse, or Foundation Year, should refer to the information for transfer students for their first year in Boston and to the information for Upperclassmen for future years. Students entering after completing NUbound, should refer to the Upperclassmen Information.
Northeastern University’s Second Year Experience (SYE) Program will provide students with an enhanced personal vision through academic and co-curricular exploration, supplementing their experience at Northeastern and beyond. The SYE Program will build on the foundation of the First Year Experience and Living Learning Communities Programs through continued support and meaningful community interaction.
Every second year resident will be exposed to programs and resources that match the program pillars of Academic Success, Experiential Learning, Career Exploration and Interdependent Living.
Through the course of the year, the university reserves the right to alter these designations at any time. Upon the return from their NUin semester, NUin Students are often placed in second year or upperclassmen accommodations based on availability for the Spring of their first year.
Transfer Students
University housing for transfer students, students who have completed a second year specialized entry program and students in their third year and beyond is limited and on a space available basis.
These students live in a mix of university and off-campus housing in Boston or participate in co-op, study abroad, or learning opportunities outside of Boston.
Currently, university housing is not available for transfer students or students who have completed a second year specialized entry program who are being admitted for the upcoming academic year, and there is no transfer student waitlist. Each year, new transfer students being admitted to Northeastern will be informed of housing availability at the time of admission.
Off Campus Housing and Support Services provides resources to students looking to secure off-campus housing in the Boston area. Helpful resources on their website include advice on tenant rights, what to expect in a lease, referrals to area realtors, and a real-time database with available property listings.
After your first year, as a continuing student, please refer to the Upperclassmen Application and Selection Process. While you are not guaranteed housing in the Upperclassmen Process, you may still apply following their timeline.
Non-Required Upperclassmen Students
University housing for students in their third year and beyond is limited and on a space available basis. These students live in a mix of university and off-campus housing in Boston or participate in co-op, study abroad, or learning opportunities outside of Boston.
Through the course of the year, the university reserves the right to alter these designations at any time. Upon the return from their NUin semester, NUin Students are often placed in second year or upperclassmen accommodations based on availability for the Spring of their first year.
Graduate and Law Students
There will not be University Housing for new or returning Graduate Students or Law Students for the 2024-2025 academic year.
We encourage you to utilize the following Northeastern University resources in your search for off-campus housing in the Boston area:
- Register to use Northeastern’s Off-Campus Housing Online database or use the Roommate Feature to search for roommates and sublets. The database is continuously updated with property listings by area realtors and landlords.
- Contact Off Campus Support and Engagement Services by calling 617-373-8480, emailing offcampus@northeastern.edu, or viewing their website for referrals to area realtors, and advice on tenant rights and what to expect in a lease.
