Dear Parents & Families
Living in university housing is an amazing opportunity and experience for your student – one that we hope will be full of learning, meaningful friendships, social development and of course, fun. Your student will navigate many exciting and challenging experiences, therefore, we believe in forging partnerships with both parents and guardians to support their journey in social and academic success.
Preparing for a New Semester
We look forward to welcoming you and your student to campus. As you prepare to arrive to a new space, you may have questions about how to prepare. Students are always assigned a specific move-in date and time which is shared with them via Northeastern email. Sometimes, there is opportunity to change their arrival date, although early arrivals are not always available and move-in services may not be available on alternate dates.
While we cannot share specific room details like layout, number of closets, square footage, etc, we will recommend that you bring the essentials and a few personal touches. There are opportunities near campus to purchase additional items, as well as having items shipped to campus once your student has settled into their space. It is common for students to move to different rooms for summer terms, and having a manageable amount of belongings is helpful for those transitions.
- Looking for a recommended list of what to bring (and what not to bring)? You can find more information on our What to Bring page.
- Find more information on Move-in/out dates and processes here.
- We partner with several vendors who provide resources to our students and families such as summer storage, microfridge rentals, and blue bike services. More information can be found on our Vendor Information page.
Room Change Policy
The majority of students share a bedroom, bathroom, kitchen, and/or common space with one or more roommates. Housing and Residential Life is committed to fostering roommate relationships centered in open communication and mutual respect. As students navigate living with others, it is common for everyday conflicts to arise around sharing space and belongings.
We encourage frequent communication between roommates and encourage students to utilize their roommate agreement to establish agreed upon standards for living together. If your student is having a roommate conflict, you can assist them by role playing a difficult conversation or encouraging them to speak with their Resident Assistant for support. If you are concerned that the conflict has raised beyond reasonable conflict, you or your student should reach out to their Residence Director for more guidance.
- If there is a facilities concern, please have your student submit a Facilities Work Request on their Student Hub If they need help following up on a current facilities work order, please contact your students Building Staff.
- If you have a medical concern, please register your student’s medical need with Disability Access Services (DAS). Any medical accommodation must first be documented and reviewed by the housing accommodation team. Please review the information on how to start that process here.

Visiting Your Student
Many families choose to visit their student throughout the course of the academic year. By reviewing the following guest policy, you will be better prepared when you come to campus. Make plans with your student prior to visiting campus and discuss the date and time of your visit and where you will meet. This will reduce any miscommunication and give your student an opportunity to share your planned arrival with roommates.
- You may have no more than three visitors signed in at a time and they may only stay in the building up to three consecutive nights in a week.
- Roommates must work out their own arrangements for visitors; if you cannot agree, seek a staff member for help.
- Guests must bring a photo ID along with them in order to be signed in to their residence hall. Guests are not allowed past the Proctor Station without being signed in with a valid photo ID.
- Guests must be 16 years old or older and have a valid photo ID. Guests younger than the age of 16 may not stay overnight.
