The First Year Experience (FYE) program has been developed to help Northeastern University’s first year students transition into this new and exciting chapter of their lives – college life. Residential Life is dedicated to working with Northeastern students to help them build strong community living environments that support personal development and academic success. These environments provide opportunities to learn outside of the classroom through the Living Learning Community program.
The foundation for the FYE program is held by four pillars: Personal Development, Academic Success, Experiential Learning and Community Development. These pillars are the guiding principles of the programs and resources specific to the needs of first year students. The goal is to help students navigate the University, familiarize them in their first year living away from home, and with life in a new environment.
Undergraduates who enter as first-year students through fall admission and NUin are required to live in university housing during their first and second years, unless a global or co-op experience takes them outside of the city of Boston.
How Do I Apply?
How Am I Assigned?
First year students are assigned housing in enrollment deposit date order, so enrolling in the university as soon as you have made your decision is important!
In an effort to make your transition to campus more seamless, we assign you based on your Living Learning Community preferences. We want you to spend your first year surrounded by students of similar interests, with whom you feel you you could be friends. While there are college affiliated LLC’s students in that college are not required to choose those LLCs, and alternatively students in other majors could choose a different college affiliate LLC if they wish. If you have a friend you would like to live with, you can create a roommate group in your housing application!
LLC’s are then assigned to buildings after the application deadline in order to assign as many students to their top choice LLC. Based on interest level of each LLC the assigned building changes from year to year.
